Hey ladies, remember the class when we discussed the coming of the Holy Spirit upon men!? Well this painting is an artists' interpretation of what the day of Pentecost may have looked like when the Holy Spirit came upon men just like the scriptures described it: (Acts 2: 1-4): "On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit ..." See all the little tongues of fire beaming towards each of them and settling above their heads; that is the Holy Spirit! The painting is titled, "Pentecost," and it obviously has a catholic emphasis since we can see the artist has placed Mary in the center, but regardless of the interpretation, this picture provides an idea we can grasp of what Luke was trying to translate to us in Acts. We can learn much from art ladies, so never count it out, but always do your research. As you well know my opinion is biased lol considering I am an art fanatic, so of course I would encourage you to look up art, but the truth is- art can't lie. While anything can be rewritten, erased, or distorted, art is the majority of our history and in our earliest centuries, it is filled with images of Jesus Christ, and Biblical interpretations, just as this painting here. This is oil on canvas, and was painted by Jean ll Restout, a French neoclassical painter in 1732 and today it is located in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France.
